History

ORIGINS
Founded as a result of the enthusiasm spawned by the first rabies vaccine, the Pasteur Institute is recognized worldwide as a symbol of French science and culture. Its international reputation is the result of a long tradition of critical scientific discoveries such as the identification of the bacillus of the plague, the development of vaccines against diphtheria, tetanus, and yellow fever and the discovery of the first and second AIDS viruses (VIH1) and (VIH2).

SUCCESS
To date, eight Pasteur Institute researchers have been awarded the Nobel Prize

INVOLVEMENT
The Pasteur Institute is present on all fronts in the fight against infectious diseases, particularly in the search for vaccines against infections as varied as AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, shigelloses and certain types of cancers, and in the study of the alarming resistance of certain bacteria to antibiotics.

SPHERES OF ACTIVITY
Since its creation, the Pasteur Institute has been active in three areas of activity: research, education and public health. It is open to the world and seeks public support for the cause of:

a) Scientific and medical research

b) Public health service

c) Education and training

d) Research applications

FINANCIAL RESOURCES

The PASTEUR INSTITUTE WORLDWIDE
Institut Pasteur à Paris

AND IN CANADA

INRS-Institut Armand-Frappier

The Canadian Louis Pasteur Foundation (CLPF)

ITS BEGINNINGS
The CLPF was born of the combined efforts of the Pasteur Institute in Paris and Quebecers dedicated to Louis Pasteur's mission to prevent and control infectious diseases throughout the world. Even today, infectious diseases are the first cause of mortality. Further, the potential outbreak of pandemics such as SARS, influenza, bird flu, HIV, etc. demonstrates the importance of pursuing top calibre research for the greater good of humanity. Moreover, the Pasteur Institute is dedicated to fundamental research on infectious diseases as well as other scientific applications, such as anti-doping and drug detection activities.

ITS ACTIVITIES
The prime objective of the CLPF is to offer financial support to Canadian students wishing to continue their postdoctoral studies at the Pasteur Institute in Paris and conversely, since the establishment of the Michel Saucier chair, offer financial support to foreign students wishing to pursue their postdoctoral studies in Canadian laboratories.

Since the beginning of 2005, the CLPF also instituted two new fellowships in cooperation with the Fondation Armand-Frappier for high level researchers wishing to pursue their research in its laboratories. This cooperation with the Foundation Armand-Frappier was brought about through the determination of our two organizations to offer mutual support in the advancement of scientific research particularly in the field of infectious diseases. Since the INRS-Institut Armand-Frappier was recently officially accredited within the Pasteur world network as the prime institute for fundamental research on infectious diseases in North America, it is now part of the great Pasteur family.

In addition to awarding numerous fellowships, the CLPF financed the participation of top researchers in the World Congress in Immunology, which was held in Montreal in the summer of 2004 and the fall of 2005.
